John Gormly Succeeds Joseph O. Oltmans II as New Chief Executive Officer at Oltmans Construction Co.; Charles Roy Becomes President

Oltmans Construction Co., a Las Vegas Chapter AGC and AGC of California member, announced that on April 1, John Gormly became chairman and chief executive officer, succeeding Joseph O. Oltmans II, who continues as chairman emeritus. Charles “Charlie” Roy, former senior vice president and the grandson of Oltmans Construction Co.’s first founding partner Dennis Roy Sr., has become president.

Joseph O. Oltmans II is the third generation of Oltmans to have lead the company. He began his journey as an Oltmans Construction team member in the early 1950s, when, as a sophomore in high school, he tried his hand at digging ditches and cleaning lumber in the field part-time. In 1964, he began working full-time in the office, picking up plans, running bids, estimating and managing projects, and eventually extended into the real estate market. Oltmans assumed the role of president in 1982, chief executive officer in 1993, and chairman in 2003. He has largely influenced the expansion of Oltmans Construction from a $1-million company in the 1950s to the organization it is today—with $720 million in companywide sales in 2018 and a team of over 500 employees.

Oltmans says of his colleagues and friends, “John and Charlie have been integral to Oltmans Construction’s history as well as its tremendous growth. Their strong leadership and passion for our company will continue to carry us into our promising future.”

John Gormly, who has been with the company since 1975 and served as president since 2003, has overseen all corporate operations as well as the advancement of Oltmans Construction into new markets and territories, including the healthcare, education, multi-family, and senior-living markets throughout the Southwest. He has dedicated much of his career to Oltmans Construction. In his tenure, Gormly scaled the ranks as estimator and project manager, to director of sales and marketing, vice president, and later, president.

As he prepares to advance the business and principles established through three generations of Oltmans family leadership, Gormly says, “It’s a great honor and greater responsibility to serve as chairman and CEO of Oltmans Construction. As a 44-year veteran at the company, the foundations established in 1932 by our founder, J.O. Oltmans, of honesty, ethical business practices, and professionalism, have become an integral part of the DNA of our firm and will continue as we move forward.”

Charlie Roy, with Oltmans Construction since 1984, continues to manage the company’s overall operations, resources, and assets. Like Oltmans, Roy began his decades-long career at the company working in the yard and field every summer while in high school, and as a concrete estimator while attending college at UCLA. Roy later delved into project management and sales, created and led the company’s Special Projects Division (which after 29 years, accounts for 20 percent of the company’s annual revenue), and in 2008, began managing over nine million square feet of commercial product. In 2018, Roy was named senior vice president, and a year later, president.

Roy says, “The same drive that has propelled me for 35 years at Oltmans Construction continues as our talented team progresses the company into its next decades of growth and innovation. John and my varied but complementary backgrounds have given us an in depth view of what it takes to bring a top-quality project to fruition and meet the unique needs of our clients.”

Under Oltmans, Gormly, and Roy’s leadership, Oltmans Construction is now ranked No. 19 on the Los Angeles Business Journal’s general contractors list; No. 137 on ENR’s list of Top 400 Contractors; and is a Great Place to Work CertifiedTM Company.

Gormly and Roy are committed to growing Oltmans Construction’s status as one of the nation’s most successful general contractors through their dedication to Oltmans’ values of integrity, honesty, hard work, and family. And, although an 87-year-old company, Gormly states, “We are committed to new ideas, markets, and technology which will continue to make our industry evolve and grow. We embrace opportunities to grow as a firm as well, and are seeing a considerable amount of new and exciting projects ahead.”
