Gulch building is first in Nashville to feature state-of-the-art heavy timber construction
Turner Construction Company, a member of multiple AGC chapters, recently celebrated the midway point of construction of MarketStreet Enterprises‘ Three Thirty Three mixed-use development at 333 11th Avenue South in Nashville.
The five-story, 80,000-square-foot brick building is located at the intersection of 11th Avenue South and Pine Street in Nashville’s Gulch neighborhood. It will feature a mix of retail and restaurant space on the ground floor and office space on floors two through five. Construction began in November 2018, with completion expected in March 2020.
Three Thirty Three features the Nashville market’s first-ever use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor decking, which is incorporated into the interior design to highlight the organic nature of the building’s structure. It serves as a modern interpretation of historic 20th-century industrial warehouses, paying homage to the Gulch’s history. CLT incorporates three layers of kiln-dried engineered wood paneling, laid perpendicular and glued together, providing a high degree of stability, strength and rigidity.
“Over the last 20 years of working in the Gulch, every building added has been carefully considered and expertly designed to ensure it enhances and furthers the Gulch’s place as Nashville’s premier urban district,” said Jay Turner, Managing Director of MarketStreet Enterprises. “Three Thirty Three is no exception. As the first-ever building in Nashville with cross-laminated timber flooring there will be no other office like it. The design is stunning and practical as it creates seamless and open floor plans to promote collaboration and connectivity. Likewise, the classic brick exterior is a stark contrast to many glass offices currently under construction, delivering a timeless building that stands out among its contemporaries while feeling authentic to the Gulch.”
The interior will feature open floor plans, tall ceilings and abundant natural light. The exterior will incorporate brick, limestone and steel replica windows. Traditional techniques such as brick corbeling and grapevine texturing of the mortar will give the building a classic look reminiscent of the Gulch’s industrial days.
Tenants of Three Thirty Three will ultimately gain more than a stunning corporate home. MarketStreet has spent years crafting the Gulch into Nashville’s most exciting urban neighborhood. This includes programming recurring special occasions like the Gulch Night Market in the summer and fall and diverse pop-up events at Grace’s Alley. The extra care put into placemaking by the area’s master developer has established the Gulch as an exciting and attractive destination that helps businesses recruit talent.
Turner is collaborating on the project with architect Earl Swensson Associates Inc. and Firma Studio (landscape). The project’s engineers are I.C. Thomasson Associates Inc. (mechanical and electrical), Balata (structural), Civil Site Design Group (civil).
“We’re proud to be working on Three Thirty Three, as it will be a true standout in the Gulch,” said Andrea Hill, project manager of Turner’s Special Projects Division. “The building’s unique design is a perfect fit for SPD, allowing us to showcase our craftsmanship as we deliver a product of the highest quality.”
